Abigail was dismissed from her position at the Proctors' house because she had an affair with John Proctor some seven months before the play begins. In Act One, when Abigail and John speak alone, she references this affair, saying that he "clutched [her] back behind [his] house and sweated like a stallion whenever [she came] near."
