Reverend Parris's anger and concern are both the result of real concern for his child and concern for himself and his status in the town. Abigail, his niece, tells him that "Betty's not witched [....]. We did dance, uncle, and when you leaped out of the bush so suddenly, Betty was frightened and then she fainted. And there's the whole of it." However, this doesn't add up. Betty cannot wake up, and this is inconsistent with a simple swoon...
